There was a time when we knew Deepavali was coming before we even looked at the calendar. The house would be cleaned, the kitchen would fill with the aroma of festive snacks, and everyone would be eagerly waiting for the big day. Times have changed, but the joy of these little traditions stays with us.

For us, Deepavali never began on Deepavali day. It started almost a month before. We would plan the cookies and savouries we wanted to make. Murukku, oma podi and ribbon pakoda were always a must.
On the morning itself, we were woken up early and went to the temple. As my father was the eldest, our home would fill with uncles, aunts and cousins, and we would enjoy lunch and dinner together.
But one of my favourite memories was the previous evening: dinner at an uncle's home, followed by fireworks and laughter with my cousins. Looking back, what made Deepavali special was having everyone together.
